Introduction to me, Savanna

Hi everyone,

My name is Savanna Johnston and I am originally from Newcastle, Oklahoma, which is a small town about 20 minutes outside of Norman. I moved to Norman my freshman year in 2016 and have been here ever since. I am a Psychology major with minors in Women's and Gender Studies and Sociology, and I expect to graduate this December (hopefully). After graduating with my Bachelor's degree, I plan on getting a Master's degree in counseling and becoming an LPC. I also have a passion for women's health, both mental and physical. I feel that women deserve better care all around, which we are very much lacking in the state of Oklahoma. Because of this, I also plan on becoming a certified doula and eventually teaming up with a life-long best friend to start our own midwifery. I would love to be able to counsel women through one of the most difficult, beautiful, magical times in their lives, and also be right there along side of them, bringing a new life into this world the way that they choose.

In addition, I live in a house near campus with my partner, Kileigh, and 4 other roommates, so it is a full house for sure! Among all of the people, we have 4 cats. One is my roommate's cat and his name is Cassidy. He was an older stray cat in our neighborhood that came up to the door and found his forever home. The other 3 cats are Kileigh and I's children. Our cats names are Gannon, Meg, and Kenny. Kenny is the youngest and will turn 2 years old in April, while Gannon is the middle child turning 5 this summer, and Meg is our old lady who turns 17 this July. As you can see, we love cats of all ages and can't get enough of them!

In my spare time, I like to get crafty and do embroidery. I also make bath salts and candles, along with herbal teas. I love watching tv and movies, but my favorite things to watch are documentaries and murder mysteries. There is nothing better than curling up in a fluffy blanket with some tea and watching a movie.

  1. Oh, how great that you are going to be a doula, Savanna! What a great service to be able to provide. There was a Storybook someone did years ago in this class you might like: Dai Dreaming: A Collection of Birth Stories ... dais are the village midwives of India! Stanford undergrad uncovers importance of traditional midwives in India ... and here's a fun cat fact: all the goddesses and gods of India have their vahanas, or vehicles, and it is the goddess of childbirth, Shashthi, who rides a cat! Wikipedia: Shashthi ... so maybe that is something you might enjoy working on in this class, learning about midwives both real and mythological in India. :-)

  2. Girl you’re out here doing the most. I’m a psychology major too, and I’m struggling between either becoming a LPC or maybe a social worker or an actual psychologist. The possibilities are endless. I agree women are important, but my ideal demographic is anyone 20 and older.

That’s so cool that you do embroidery and want to become a doula. Do you know what a crunchy mom is? If not, you should google it. It’s definitely not an insult, and I think you’d be a great crunchy mom.

I also love watching murder mysteries. Real ones scare me more than fake ones usually, but some of my favourite fiction shows are Poirot and Criminal Minds.

  3. Hi Savanna, nice to meet you. I'm also a Psychology major, how fun, I wonder if we've been in other classes together and just not known! I am also a big fan of murder mysteries or true crime cases! I'm pre-law so I guess I'm super interested in criminal cases and how people get caught and prosecuted! I don't know if you've ever watched Buzzfeed Unsolved, but it's a great series with 20-minute long episodes! I would highly recommend it!

  4. Hey Cat Mom!
It's cool that you want to go into counseling! My mom is actually a marriage and family therapist and absolutely loves her job. I'm a firm believer that in whatever you do, do it to better the world or help others so I think it's awesome you have career goals set in just that! Wow you all are in a truly CATastrophic situation having an almost PURRfect ratio of humans to felines. Hope you enjoyed my puns as much as you're enjoying the course! By the way, gay pride all the way <3

  5. Hi Savanna,

First off, wow four cats. I can barely take care of my one dog, I can't imagine having another 3 animals on top of him haha. I also love how you know exactly what you want to do when you graduate; dedicating your future to helping others is very admirable! I hope you achieve your goals and good luck with the rest of the semester!

  6. Hi Savanna!
I love reading everyone's blog because everytime I open up one to comment on that person has a different major than the last one! One thing that we have in common is that I love animals! I have had all sorts of different kind of pets like turtles, birds, dogs and many more the list goes on. Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  7. Hello Savanna! I'm also from Oklahoma and I've lived out in the Bridgecreek area for a time, so I'm definitely familiar with the Newcastle area! Congrats on being almost done, it sometimes feels like it will never end so push through. I agree with you on the overall lack of care that Oklahoman's get, but it is very apparent when looking at how women are treated here. It sounds you a great field for you to be in and our state is lucky to have you! Best of luck!

  8. Hi Savanna!
Congratulations on having a graduation date! I love how you have a passion and interest for women's health in Oklahoma. I am also super passionate about this, and I think as women, it is important to stand together about issues facing us! I am sure you are very knowledgeable about this subject from your women and gender studies classes. I may have to hit you up for some relaxing bath salts! That is awesome you know how to make them.

  9. Hey Savanna! My big also has the same name as you, how cute! Sis... I can't believe you have SO. MANY. CATS! Personally, I'm a dog person but even I know how hard it is to take care of animals, especially as a college student. Is having a cat easier than having a dog because they take themselves to the bathroom? Seriously asking because I don't know how cats work haha!

  10. Hi Savanna! I loved hearing you talk about your major and your future aspirations. It was apparent that you are truly passionate about what you are doing in life! That is crazy you have so many cats--they are adorable. I'm wondering how you picked the name Gannon...are you a LOZ or smash fan perhaps? Also I have always wondered whether people that have so many cats don't like dogs or they just happen to love cats that much. i'm really impressed with your creative ability to do crafts and make candles. I can't wait to read more of your stories throughout the semester!

  11. Hey Savanna! I love that you have so many cats. I have two cats at home myself and they are so fun. Your career goals are awesome and it is great that you have set the bar for yourself and your future. You seem like a selfless person and that will suit you well in your career path. Best of luck this semester!

  12. Hello Savannah. Your vibes, first and foremost, are impeccable. I'm getting a lovely mental image of your home with lots of little embroidered decorations and candles and cats and (you said "partner" and "two moms," so I'm gonna go ahead and assume things) lesbians and tea and blankets. Sounds heavenly. Kind of like an 80 year old woman's pipe dream. I approve.
You want to be a midwife? That's badass. I don't ever want kids; babies freak me out, so I could never do that job! I applaud you though, I'm sure that takes the kind of grit I don't have.

  13. Savanna, a fun fact for you is that I actually had a friend named Savannah Johnson in high school in Arkansas, so I got a good laugh seeing how close your names were! I also think you should totally put some of your embroidery work up on the page, I'd love to see what you've got. Your cat's face is becoming a perfect addition to my reaction collection to send to friends!

  14. Hi there.

I love that you have your whole life ahead of you - and better yet, it's all planned out! We love an ambitious and passionate woman. The names you have for your cats there are quite interesting! How did you come up with them? Or what inspired those names? I have also really been into herbal teas lately. Quarantine's got me cooking up all kinds of new in the kitchen. Chamomile is my favorite so far. What's yours?

  15. Hello Savannah,
The picture of your cat mid-existential crisis made me chuckle. Kinda reminded me of my face all to many times during this semester because of school. I love cats and hope to have several myself some day, so it's cool that you're living that dream already. Pet your cats for me!
